Solar PV and energy storage system provider (and PowerHub development partner) SolarWing was in need of an integrated, deliverable unit that provides solar customers with significant inverter capability and adequate backup power to support local loads in the case of a grid outage. The solution PHS designed uses three off-the-shelf inverters, an automatic transfer switch, and a lithium-ion battery pack. The system features a very simple construction of lightweight aluminum sheet metal that is ruggedized with hard-anodizing and powder coat paint.
The end product is a simple and easily assembled kit-of-parts, that can be supplied by most contract manufacturers and can work with a variety of off-the-shelf gridtie and off-grid inverters. Both the installer and/or the end customer can customize the power conversion equipment to best suit their environment and budget.
To the left is a modularized high-density battery backup system for heavy residential to light commercial applications that PHS developed for Solarwing. This system is available in a variety of form factors and can be deployed both inside or outside and customized for rugged environments.
Ruggedized Energy Systems
This hybrid energy storage container was developed for military forward operating base (FOB) applications. These FOB applications require high capacity mobile energy storage systems that can coordinate with existing diesel generator systems to provide a hybid power solution. In collaboration with a battery company and another inverter company, PHS customized this container to be tough enough for almost any military deployment while employing some of the highest-density power conversion equipment currently on the market.

These technologies allow broader, quieter power options for troops on the move. With closed loop cooling systems and dust tight environmental seals, the trailorized system and the drop-in-place unit are suitable for hot and dirty environments.
Commercial Solar Firming
This modular system is designed for commercial and industrial (C&I) applications requiring behind-the-meter peak shaving and/or solar PV interoperability. The system can be deployed in both indoor and outdoor locations depending on the customer need. The slim enclosure with front-access design is particularly well suited for loading-dock deployment where floor space and unit clearance are important. The several permutations below illustrate that the design is modular in terms of power, energy, environmental rating, and ambient temperature specifications.
With the growing availability of suppliers of modular batteries, inverters, and HVAC units, the permutations for this system are near endless.
